What is SLAG?

What is SLAG?

Pi Kappa Alpha was founded on the 4 pillars of SLAG:

  • Scholars
  • Leaders
  • Athletes
  • Gentlemen

Scholars

Your #1 priority at college is to excel in academics.  In today’s competitive world, differentiating yourself from other college students is very important.  Academic excellence is the key to success in the future and can put you head and shoulders above your competition. From day one, Pi Kappa Alpha provides the resources and support that will make your time in college as successful as it can be.

PIKE

Here at the University of Texas at Arlington, Pi Kappa Alpha offers its members incentives and benefits for maintaining high levels of scholastic aptitude through our very generous scholarship funds that are provided by our scholarship program and alumni.  As you will see, the scholarship program has developed far beyond what other groups or fraternities could possibly offer.  It gives great opportunities for all chapter members to be rewarded for maintaining excellence both in and out of the classroom. In fact, in Spring 2006 the Eta Upsilon chapter here was awarded the Scholarship plate from Pi Kappa Alpha for having over a 3.0 chapter GPA. You can click here to read the article regarding academics that our Chapter Advisor, Andy Axsom, wrote and was published in the Shield and Diamond which is the quarterly magazine published by Pike.
Leaders

Leadership is the key to both Pi Kappa Alpha's success and the success of our individual members.  The Fraternity provides a valuable arena for developing and honing leadership skills that will benefit the individual member throughout life.  Pi Kappa Alpha provides leadership opportunities through executive positions within the chapter, as well as committee positions within the chapter.  To help foster these values, Pi Kappa Alpha at UTA provides new members with our Leadership Development Program to help mold future leaders.  In addition, Pi Kappa Alpha promotes leadership through campus involvement by involving its members in positions of leadership in other organizations.  On a regional and international level, unique opportunities are offered in leadership training through Pike University Leadership Summits, The Academy, and the Chapter Executives Conference.

Leadership Development Program:

  • Focus on developing new members into great leaders
  • Opportunities to learn about the fraternity operates and gives a good understanding to those new members that want to lead the fraternity in the future
  • Exposes new members to organizations outside of the fraternity
  • New members participating in this program plan a variety of events including community service, philanthropy, social, brotherhood, and more
  • Key to the success of the fraternity
  • More than anything else, a great way for those participating to grow into well-rounded and confident men

On the UTA campus, Pikes can be found in a variety of organizations and a multitude of leadership positions.  Some of these include:

  • 2009 Liberal Arts Senator- Mikhail Sookoor
  • 2009 Business Senator - Brandon Henslee
  • 2009 Liberal Arts Senator - John Reed
  • 2009 Tri Delta Golden Hammer - Chase Southerland
  • UTA Ambassador and Orientation Leader - Joel Palacios
  • VP of Communications of Young Conservatives of Texas at UTA - Ryan Ormes
  • IFC Best New Member - Ryan Balcom
  • President of UTA's Hockey Team - Ryan Balcom
  • Vice President of UTA's Lacrosse Team - Ryan Balcom

The men of Pi Kappa Alpha are leaders in excelling both in and out of the classroom and know that campus involvement is important in not only growing as a individual, but also in having a complete college experience.

Athletes

Athletic competition provides valuable benefits to college students because it involves people in challenging each other to perform at their highest levels.  Pi Kappa Alpha is dedicated to inspiring its members to perform at their highest levels in everything they do.  Pi Kappa Alpha believes that through athletic competition our members will build teamwork skills fundamental to success in life, bolster unity within the chapter, and improve the quality of their overall college experience.

Each semester the men of Pi Kappa Alpha participate in all intramural sports that the University has to offer.  By doing this, we are not only focusing on winning titles, but also aiming to provide an opportunity for individuals to play their sports of choice.  Along with this, multiple teams may be fielded in a sport so that every Pike has the opportunity to play.  Whether you are a player, or working on the sidelines, the athletic program builds teamwork skills fundamental to success in life. This teamwork and the winning spirit add to the overall brotherhood of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Gentlemen

Six standout gentlemen started our Fraternity in 1868.  Today we continue in their tradition by only recruiting the best men.  Pi Kappa Alpha prides itself on the fact that we are composed solely of gentlemen. We recruit members who are respectful to themselves and others.  Once they are members, these men are given the opportunity to improve and practice proper social skills and behavior through membership development programming and Fraternity social events.  Producing quality gentlemen is the most important aspect of our Fraternity. Without the knowledge of being a gentleman, a scholar, a leader, or an athlete will never be able to reach his full potential.
