Some Eta Upsilon Chapter History

The Pi Kappa Alpha Eta Upsilon Chapter at the University of Texas at Arlington was first colonized on December 4, 1971 by 15 members of the local fraternity Alpha Kappa Pi. (Ironically, it the Pi Kappa Alpha backwards!) On January 26, 1973, the Eta Upsilon chapter was charted.

Thanks to a Bill Loftin, a current Sip-Ep alumni board member who knew the Pikes back in the day and grew up across the street of where the Pike house stood, cleared up a lot of history up for us. The first Pike house at UTA, seen below, was located at the second house from the SW corner of UTA & College and was originally the residence of the honorable and famous Dr. Cothburn O'Neal who was once the head English department, assistant to the President of UTA, and has been honored as a Distinguished Alumnus twice before he passed away in 1995. The house is thought of being rented from UTA because Dr. O'Neal sold his house to UTA and UTA was renting out houses very cheap to all the fraternities such as Kappa Sigs and the Betas who were also in the area. The house was thought of being sold in the late 70's.

The second Pike house, built in 1920's, was located where the Sigma Chi house stands today. It is believed that the FIJI's occupied the house before the Pikes. When the Pikes left the campus in the latter 70's, it was knocked down and the Sigma Chi house was built on top of it.

Also, another interesting fact is the Sigma Chi chapter here at UTA was originally started by expelled members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at UTA around the year 1980. It took the hard work of many dedicated members to pull the chapter back together during this separation time.

The third Pike house at UTA was located at the SW corner of Abram and Cooper where the Pikes lived throughout the later 80's and 90's. Unfortunately it turned into a salon shop when the Pikes left campus in 2000. This pictures below is donated by Ken Smith who is a 1990 intiate of the chapter.

The Pi Kappa Alpha Eta Upsilon chapter came back on campus as a colony on December 5, 2004. On April 22, 2006, the Eta Upsilon chapter was rechartered and the Pikes are ready to take back the campus that was once theirs!
